Extreme caution should be taken when working with any power devices. There are often high voltages present even after they have been disconnected from the power. They usually contain large capacitors which store dangerous levels of energy.
Power devices range from simple wall-wart type power supplies, through a computer's "switched mode" power supply, all the way up to big UPS and industrial power distribution systems.
Many of the components you will find in them are designed for handling higher voltages and currents, but can still be used at lower voltages.
Diodes and rectifiers, MOSFETs, relays and transformers are plentiful in these type of devices.
